Symbolism

SHIELD

The partition of field of the shield (Gyronny) and the Zia Sun are properties from the flag of the City of Wichita. The anchor is the principal element of the design, symbolizing the United States Navy. The buffalo skulls call to mind the Native American Wichita tribe that hunted buffalo throughout Kansas and also commemorate the two previous Naval ships bearing the name WICHITA.

CREST

The torse or wreath takes the first metal and color from the shield. The buffalo skull is symbolic of the Wichita Indians who were known to tattoo their faces and bodies with solid and dotted lines and circles. In tandem with the two other buffalo skulls, they represent LCS 13 as the third commissioned Navy ship to bear the name and pay homage to the City of Wichita. The wheat stalks depict the main crop of Kansas and the vigor of the City and its residents. The feathers represent Wichitas long history and rich heritage of Native American tribes.
